Where Young Artists Found Their Stage: Inside the Institute’s 2025 Summer Camp
This past summer, the classrooms at Kean University came alive with rhythm, laughter, and discovery. For five weeks, more than 270 young people filled these spaces as part of the Institute of Music for Children’s 2025 Summer Camp. They explored music, theater, dance, and design—learning not only artistic techniques but also the importance of collaboration in the creative process.
“The Institute is a safe space where students can be their authentic selves and grow. The arts allow us to tap into our inner abilities, and here they teach students how to cultivate themselves,” said Dr. Lamont O. Repollet, president of Kean University, upon receiving the Lighthouse Keeper Award from the Institute in 2025 in recognition of his outstanding support during the summer camp season.

A Season of Creative Growth
The camp provided more than just lessons in performance; it became a space for personal growth and a sense of belonging. Students collaborated with professional teaching artists to develop skills in more than 40 art forms including dance, songwriting, choreography, and stage design. They learned to take creative risks, work together on new ideas, and transform their imaginations into reality.
For many students, this was their first experience performing on a professional stage. The program culminated in a vibrant showcase at Wilkins Theatre, where students presented original songs, dances, and dramatic scenes to an enthusiastic audience of family and friends. The night was not just a performance; it was a celebration of confidence and community.
This year was significant for the Institute, as our classes transitioned from our traditional facilities to Kean University, which provided a variety of amenities that impacted our campers’ overall experience while our own building undergoes renovation and construction. Thanks to the generosity of our neighbors at Kean University, students were able to continue their advanced classes and even expand the spaces available for performing and creating their art.
Leadership from Within
A key aspect of the Institute’s summer program is the inclusion of Youth Leaders—older teens and alumni who return each year to mentor younger campers. They are in every classroom, collaborating with teaching artists, and also, they manage logistics, and serve as examples of teamwork and responsibility. In doing so, they also gain valuable experience as educators and role models.
This development program nurtures artists, cultivates future leaders who understand the importance of service and collaboration and provides additional support for those who need a small push or have special learning needs. Additionally, it fosters continuity: some students who start at the Institute as children grow into mentors who pass their knowledge to those who follow.
The Lasting Impact of a Summer
The impact of the program extends far beyond the months of July and August. Many campers continue their creative journeys through our afterschool arts programs, where they can enroll in music lessons, ensembles and a variety of classes from our many art forms.
For parents, the camp provides more than just enrichment; it offers a safe and inspiring environment that promotes self-esteem and fosters a sense of community. Donor support is crucial for maintaining this experience. Scholarships, equipment, and stipends for teaching artists ensure that every child who wishes to participate can do so, regardless of their circumstances.
