A Community Effort to Welcome More Campers

The first day of Summer Camp at the Institute was filled with excitement, laughter, and energy, much like the start of a new season. This summer, over 245 students are taking part at three locations, showing how our programs and community continue to grow.

Because our main campus is under construction for our expansion project and enrollment continues to grow, we needed to use additional spaces this summer. Our partnership with First Baptist Church allows us to continue offering the high-quality arts experience that Institute families expect, while welcoming students in grades 1 to 3 at the church's facilities.

"I'm most excited to see the kids adapt and flourish in all the classes they take," said Program Support Staff member Daniella Catarino, who is one of our leaders at Younger Kids Camp this summer. This spirit of growth and discovery is central to every day at the Institute, where campers are encouraged to try new artistic interests, build confidence, and make lasting friendships.

In the Baptist Church Sanctuary, with its high ceilings and stained-glass windows, our Younger Kids campers quickly joined in games led by Teaching Artists and Youth Leaders. Ms. Meli and Ms. Ciara started things off with a lively game of Simon Says. Later, Mr. Justin and Ms. Ryan led singing exercises and asked students to identify unusual musical instruments.

During the Summer Institute, students can choose from over 40 classes, such as singing, hip-hop, visual art, creative writing, drumming, and more. These experiences are supported by 32 Teaching Artists and more than 20 Youth Leaders working full time all summer. Each day from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., campers dive into the arts with a busy schedule of creative learning, teamwork, and exploration.

Students at the Performance Arts Camp spend their summer creating, rehearsing, and improving full-scale production through teamwork and regular practice. The program ends with a live performance this August for the Institute community. To get ready, band team students rehearse at our second partner location, Townley Presbyterian Church, and dance team rehearsals are held at First Baptist.

The hands-on approach of these programs is one reason so many families spend their summers with us. Parent Jennifer Moss said last year, "We were hesitant about the commute, but the quality and welcoming environment made it an easy choice. It's been an investment in his future, we're so glad we made."

Even though Summer Camp has just started, the coming months will offer many chances for students to grow as artists and as people. Whether they are finding a new passion, building on their talents, or working with friends, campers are spending the summer in a place that helps them thrive.
