Leading from Stillness: Investing in Leadership Through Staff Development

A Space to Rest and Reset

A few days before the new year, Institute staff members Kristin Soo Hoo and Ena Gomez joined a three-day BIPOC Women Leaders Retreat in Hilton Head, South Carolina.  The retreat organizers greeted participants with curated gift boxes filled with champagne, self-care books, and “rest” affirmation cards. The schedule blended facilitated discussions with open time for reflection, bike rides, and massages: activities that encouraged participants torecharge and lead themselves from a place of stillness

“We didn’t have to participate in everything,” Ena shared. “If you wanted to go to the beach or take a walk, you could. The space was there.”

More Than Rest: Honest Conversations

Over the course of the gathering, these 15 powerful women of color talked about leadership, the weight of responsibility, navigating nonprofit work, and the very real effort it takes to balance work and life.

“To have a space to be heard by other women who are going through this, as well, was really powerful,” Ena reflected. “It wasn’t all tragic stories. Some conversations were strategic. Some were about balancing work-life schedules. There was one about self-care. All of us really, really love what we do. We’re very passionate about the communities we work with and for. But it’s also vital for us to carve out time to take care of ourselves—and to allow ourselves the opportunity to do so.”

Empowerment Through Community

Their connection continued long after the retreat ended. Kristin shared, “Everybody was really integral in being the support for each other. We still connect with each other on a regular basis.

That is what empowerment looks like. It comes from being with people who understand your work, your challenges, and your purposeThe same idea is at the heart of the Institute of Music. It is more than a place to learn musicIn the arts, in harmony, and in finding your voice, the Institute shows the same truth these women found at the retreat: when people are supported, heard, and given space to grow, great things can happen.
