Donors Spotlight: José Almeda
From Playing Music with Friends to Helping the Next Generation of Musicians
A Lifelong Love for Music Comes Full Circle
When José Almeda saw the banners for the Institute’s programs, he was reminded of his teenage years. For him, music meant gathering with friends and jamming for hours. His love for music began with his Filipino roots, but classic rock had the greatest impact and continues to shape his passion today.
José’s lifelong passion took on new meaning through his son, Joven. At first, Joven was like many young musicians and didn’t always want to practice. With support and new opportunities, though, he started to enjoy music more. He became more confident and dedicated, and eventually joined the Harmony Band. As Joven got involved, the Almeda family became part of the Institute community.
“The Institute balances the academic rigor of school,” Mr. Almeda explains. “It’s challenging for families to raise well-rounded children. At the Institute, Joven can be himself and express new ideas.” For the Almeda family, the Institute is a place where creativity and individuality are encouraged alongside discipline and growth.
Giving Back and Looking to the Future
As the Almedas became more involved with the Institute, they wanted to give back. They have volunteered their time, and Mr. Almeda believes this helps young people learn about charity and responsibility. They also make annual donations to help families who might not otherwise have access to arts education.
“The arts allow children to express their individuality and help shape who they will become in the future,” he says. The family supports many causes, but they especially value how the arts build confidence, creativity, and a sense of community.
Mr. Almeda is excited about the Institute’s new facilities, especially the plans for a professional recording studio. He thinks it will be a great resource for students, similar to the studios he visited with friends as a young man. Now, as Joven plays with the Harmony Band, he often performs the same songs his father has loved for years. It’s a reminder that music brings generations together and leaves a lasting impact.
